Outside of exploring the wilds, and all that entails, there is another activity that brings a smile to my face. Not only a physical place, but a place in time that you can travel to. A place of games and merry making. A carnival of mixed performances that bring the past to life with a twist of the future thrown in for good measure.
If you’ve never been to a Renaissance Festival I can’t tell you how much your missing out on. Have you ever sat down to eat a turkey leg while a group of belly dancers performs to a live band? How about a live pirate comedy show on a large scale pirate ship?
These are just some of the things that are taking place around you as you explore the grounds. More than you can take in with one trip.
I’ve had the pleasure of visiting several of these places. The Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival in West Newton, Pa., The Great Lakes Medieval Faire in Rock Creek, Oh., The Bay Area Renaissance Festival in Tampa, Fl. and my favorite so far – The Ohio Renaissance Festival in Harveysburg, OH. Why is The Ohio Renaissance Festival my favorite? Probably because it is close to me and it was also my first. I’ve been going to Renaissance Festivals for eight years now and my wife and I love them.
When you have a hankering to watch a good Full Contact Jousting Match, The Ohio Renaissance Festival is the place to be. The Knights of Valour can be seen here everyday the festival is open and I can guarantee they will put on one helluva show. If your lucky you might get to see Shane Adams of The History channels “Full Metal Jousting” fame. If there’s ever a reason to visit, this is it!
Did I mention the music? For me music is the center of my soul, it truly is the universal language. Watching a band or even one person perform live and raw is a form of true creative emotion to me. I like to feel it! The artists that I have seen at Renaissance Festivals bring something to their music that transports me to another time and place. I honestly can’t get enough of it!
I must admit though, My favorite so far has been Albannach! This group of talented musicians brings a level of energy to the stage that can’t be touched by many. Just so you know, I’m not Scottish but listening to them it makes me wish I was! The sounds of the bagpipes and the thunderous roar of the drums is something you have to experience live. You can hear them from any corner of the faire and when people do, they just flock to the stage. I can’t say enough about it, they rock the hell out of the faire!
Take some time to look for a Renaissance Festival near you. Look for one when you go on vacation. If sword fights, jousting, comedy shows, music and good food are some of the things you enjoy, GO…NOW! There’s nothing like it!
